What should you do if your hard drive broke down?

24/06/16

It is extremely important for every company not to lose data from its corporate devices. No matter if it is information about customers, contacts, documents, presentations or back-ups. It is quite a common problem in the small organizations, which do not have their own IT specialist.

What is a hard drive?

The hard drive of the desktop or laptop computer is a mechanical device, which consists of moveable parts. Every hard drive on the market has at least one disk platter (disk) or more, and every platter has magnetic layer, where the information is written and read from the magnetic head. The data is written on concentrated circles, called paths (tracks). When you hard drive is working normally, one of the motors rotates the platters ant the other moves the magnetic head. Actually, the head does not get in contact with the disk. Instead, it is situated on an air-bag over the disk. In case the magnetic head gets in direct contact with the disk, then a failure occurs. Regretfully, the information, that was written on the places, where the head touches the disk, is inevitably lost. So, if your hard drive fails, what can you do to fix it?

Be prepared

You must be sure to be prepared for what follows, before your hard drives fails. A good idea is to have additional external hard drives in case something happens to yours. Be sure to make back up of all your important information, such as pictures, videos, documents and all other files you cannot afford to lose. Doing this, you can stay calm if your hard drive fails, because you know your important data is secured on other place, so that you can fast transfer it to your new hard drive, and all this is due to your good practice to make regular back-ups! Do not forget to update regularly the archive copies, to be safe not to lose any part of the information.

Consider to buy a Solid State Drive (SSD)

The Solid State Drives (SSDs) are slowly substituting the standard hard drives in the computers. The SSDs work similarly to hard drives. They use beneath them flash memory chips to save the data, the SSDs are faster and more quite compared to classic hard drives. The computers, which use SSD, starts in few seconds, the installed programs are opened faster and as a whole the performance of the computer is improved. That is why the SSDs are more reliable to keep data.

Trust someone

In order to have your information fully protected, consider to hire an IT specialist or specialized company in computer maintenance. Usually, a big part of the small and medium business chooses to hire an external company who provides these type of services, and thus to get more qualitative service and to optimize the expenses. Hiring an external company will keep you calm and will not need to worry when was the last time you performed a back-up – your data will be safe.

Conclusion

The hard drive is one of the most important parts of every desktop or laptop computer. It contains a lot of information, which is of great importance to you and your organization. Many of us has personally felt what is the sense to lose our data because of a hard drive failure. Unfortunately, if this happens in our office, the consequences could be more fatal. That is why it is of great importance to make everything possible to keep your data safe.
