The Bulgarian software company ASAP has developed a new digital platform that helps physicians and pharmacists identify potentially inappropriate medicines for patients aged over 65 – an important step toward safer treatment for elderly patients.

The system was created for Medical University – Sofia and provides healthcare professionals with quick access to expert information about medicines that may pose risks for patients of advanced age.

At the core of the platform is a digitalized version of the European EU(7)-PIM list, which is used in a number of countries to identify medicines that may not be suitable for elderly patients. With just a few seconds of verification, the system shows whether a given medication is included in this list, why it is considered risky, and what alternative therapies may be used.

The platform combines information from EU(7)-PIM with data from the National Council on Prices and Reimbursement of Medicinal Products (NCPRMP). By using international standards such as ATC codes and International Nonproprietary Names (INN), the system automatically matches medicinal products and provides results in real time.

What the platform enables

  • quick verification whether a medicine is potentially inappropriate for patients over 65
  • information on why the medication is classified as risky
  • recommendations for dose adjustments
  • suggestions for possible therapeutic alternatives
  • integration with other medical and pharmaceutical systems

Elderly patients often take several medications at the same time, which increases the risk of adverse reactions and drug interactions. The new platform aims to help healthcare professionals more easily identify such risks and make more informed decisions when prescribing treatment.

„Our goal is to provide healthcare professionals with a modern and easy-to-use tool that facilitates the review of medication therapy for elderly patients. By digitalizing the EU(7)-PIM list and integrating it with national medicinal registries, physicians gain faster access to important expert information“, commented the CEO of ASAP.

The development is part of the company’s efforts to create technological solutions that support healthcare and improve the quality of medical care.
