Google Encourages Developers to Embrace AI for PostgreSQL Development
Google Cloud is encouraging its developers to actively leverage artificial intelligence tools when working on database technologies and open-source projects such as PostgreSQL. According to the company, AI is already playing a key role in accelerating software development and improving engineering productivity.
Sailesh Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Databases at Google Cloud, stated that the company has seen substantial benefits from AI-assisted coding tools. However, he emphasized that regardless of whether a piece of code is fully generated by AI or simply supported by it, responsibility for the final result remains with the developer.
Google believes that open-source projects are particularly well suited to AI-assisted development because their source code is publicly available and has often been included in the training data of large language models. This allows AI systems to better understand code structures and assist developers in building new functionality more effectively.
The company highlighted PostgreSQL as an excellent example of a platform where AI can provide significant value. Thanks to its highly extensible architecture, PostgreSQL enables rapid development of new extensions and experimentation with innovative concepts. According to Krishnamurthy, AI is especially effective when developers are implementing well-understood ideas on established codebases where the scope of change is relatively limited.
Google also noted that industry investment in PostgreSQL continues to grow. Organizations are increasingly adopting PostgreSQL not only for new cloud-native applications but also as an alternative to traditional commercial database platforms such as Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM Db2, Sybase, and Informix.
Over the past several years, major cloud providers have significantly increased their contributions to the PostgreSQL ecosystem. Microsoft, for example, introduced the pg_documentdb_core and pg_documentdb_api extensions, which bring MongoDB compatibility and BSON document support to PostgreSQL. The company has also announced HorizonDB, a distributed PostgreSQL database service.
Google is actively contributing to the PostgreSQL project as well. Recent development efforts have focused on advancing logical replication capabilities. Contributions include Automatic Conflict Detection, which enables replication workers to automatically identify conflicts between incoming changes and the local database state. Google has also contributed support for logical replication of sequences.
According to Google, demand for PostgreSQL services continues to rise as organizations modernize legacy database environments and develop new cloud-based applications. This trend is reflected across the industry, with PostgreSQL maintaining its position as one of the most popular database platforms among developers while steadily strengthening its presence in enterprise environments.
