TP-Link Introduces Its First Wi-Fi 8 Router Ahead of the Standard’s Finalization
TP-Link introduced the Archer 8 – its first router with Wi-Fi 8 support, even though the new generation wireless standard has not yet been finalized. The official Wi-Fi 8 specification is expected to be completed as late as March 2028, while TP-Link plans the market debut of Archer 8 as early as October 2026.
According to the company, Wi-Fi 8 is designed with a focus on more consistent real-world performance rather than just higher theoretical speeds. The new standard aims to reduce latency, improve connection stability, and provide better coverage even with a large number of connected devices or when moving between different rooms in a home.
TP-Link states that the Archer 8 is designed to address common issues such as unstable speeds, network congestion with multiple active devices, and delays during online gaming, video calls, and streaming services. The company emphasizes that the main goal is to deliver a more predictable and reliable connection in everyday scenarios.
In internal tests conducted in a simulated home environment, TP-Link compared an early implementation of Wi-Fi 8 with Wi-Fi 7. According to the published results, the new technology offers:
- up to 33% better maintenance of high speeds over longer distances;
- around 30% improvement for a single device connection across different floors;
- between 10% and 20% better performance in environments with multiple connected devices.
Despite the planned launch in October 2026, TP-Link notes that availability and final technical specifications may vary by region and will be announced closer to the start of sales.
It remains unclear whether the Archer 8 will be available on the U.S. market. The reason lies in new restrictions from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which classifies certain foreign-made networking equipment as a potential national security risk. As a result, new router models manufactured outside the U.S. may fall under the so-called Covered List – a list of products and services considered potential security threats.
Although TP-Link was founded in Shenzhen, China, the company serving the U.S. market is based in Irvine, California. According to official information, the U.S. division has a separate ownership, management, and operational structure, while devices for the American market are primarily manufactured in Vietnam.
Despite the business separation in 2022, U.S. authorities continue to monitor the relationship between the two entities. In 2024, the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Justice, and Defense launched investigations related to the use of TP-Link devices in a series of cyberattacks against government institutions and non-governmental organizations. Earlier in 2026, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against TP-Link, alleging that the company allowed Chinese hacking groups access to devices of American users.
The FCC does, however, provide an option for manufacturers to apply for conditional approval of new products if they relocate part of their production to the United States. Netgear is the first company to receive such approval. TP-Link has stated that it will follow the same procedure and will continue working to deliver secure and innovative networking solutions to U.S. customers.
In addition to Archer 8, the company plans to expand its Wi-Fi 8 portfolio with new products. In the first quarter of 2027, the debut of the Deco 8 mesh system is expected, followed in the second quarter by the Roam 8 mobile router and a series of Wi-Fi 8 signal extenders. For now, TP-Link has not disclosed pricing information for the new devices.
