Ubuntu 26.04 LTS Introduces Official Support for Cloud-Based Authentication via Authd

20/04/2026

Canonical is preparing a significant update in the upcoming Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release by introducing, for the first time, official support for cloud-based authentication through the Authd service.

Authd Now Part of the Official Ubuntu Repository

Authd is an identity and access management service developed by Canonical that has not previously been included in the official Ubuntu repositories. Until now, system administrators who wanted to use it relied on:

  • Canonical PPA repositories
  • compilation from source code

With the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, Authd will be available in the official “universe” repository, making it more accessible and easier to deploy in enterprise environments.

Support for Modern Authentication Standards

Authd enables Ubuntu systems to authenticate users through external cloud-based identity providers using modern standards such as OpenID Connect.

Initially, the service will support:

  • Microsoft Entra ID
  • Google Cloud IAM

The system is designed with a modular architecture, allowing support for additional identity providers to be added in the future.

Part of Ubuntu’s Long-Term Strategy

The development of Authd will follow Ubuntu’s release cycle, and with version 26.04 it will be included in Long Term Support (LTS). This means it will receive updates and support throughout the system’s long-term lifecycle.

Focus on Security and Enterprise Environments

Authd is designed to provide secure identity and access management for Ubuntu systems, particularly in environments that rely on cloud infrastructure and centralized identity services.

With its inclusion in the official Ubuntu release, Canonical takes another step toward better integration of Linux systems with modern cloud-based architectures and enterprise solutions.
